About Strange Society Studios

I'm Justin, I've been taking photos since I was kid — what was once a hobby that I first picked up from my mother. She shot on film with a manual focus camera, and even developed her own pictures at home. Some of my earliest memories are waiting in her bedroom while she worked in the dark in the bathroom. She'd seal it off with towels to prevent any light leaking in.

When I went to college, I studied journalism and mass communication and learned to develop film all on my own. Today I shoot on digital cameras — my go to's are the 5D Mark IV, and more lately a Canon's mirrorless R5C. I also use GoPro's a lot, particularly for underwater shots and sometimes, even my iPhone.

I shoot a lot of wildlife and landscapes, but I particularly love macro shots. I like exploring contrasts (like say, a series alternating between water and the desert) and love to experiment with light. I've always been interested in our cultural messages around body image and nudity and self-concept, particularly for men and especially for gay men — whose bodies are often sexualized and scrutinized as a matter of course. My portraits tend to focus on the male form, and I lean toward conceptual photos and even surrealism.

Photography is way for me to show others what I see, to share, even for a brief moment, the way I perceive the world.
